About The Islands of Loreto

Magical. Inspiring. Utterly different. This is Loreto, where the crashing surf of the Sea of Cortez, the breach of a whale, and cloudless skies, offer a break from the day-to-day routine not to mention more wildlife than your kids could see watching Animal Planet.

The "fish report" on the destination's website is your first clue that this is not your average Mexican destination. The tagline of the website: "Where not even the sun is in a hurry" is your second. This peaceful, unspoiled fishing village is the closest thing to "old Mexico" you'll find (many call it the un-Cabo). Though it's situated on the east cape of Baja, CA not far from its more famous cousin, its commitment to eco-tourism and fierce pride of its natural jewels make it a truly special place.

Once the capital of the entire California territory and the site of the first permanent Jesuit mission in 1697, the Islands of Loreto have a lively history, with an engaging Museo de Las Misiones to prove it. Loreto is also enormously protective of its wildlife, with a large population of sea lions, frolicking gray whales, playful dolphins and exotic birds. It's said that the Islands of Loreto boast 15 species of whales, 17 species of marine birds and five species of turtles. No doubt you'll leave here spying at least a dozen of one or the other.
